Queen Elizabeth visited the set of Game of Thrones in Belfast on Tuesday

The Queen Visits Game of ThronesSet, Refuses to Sit on Iron Throne

It has happened: the British royal family and the realm of Westeros have converged, as the Queen visited the set of Game of Thrones in Belfast on Tuesday, as part of her tour of Northern Ireland. As best we can tell from the photos made available, the Queen regarded the Iron Throne without really indicating by her expression exactly how she felt about the whole scene. Furthermore, she—and we are still having trouble actually coming to terms with this—did not actually sit on the Iron Throne. Queen, if we may be so bold as to address you directly like this, this was a photo op for the ages! This would be like if President Obama visited the set of House of Cards and didn't take a picture with a mugging Kevin Spacey, or if Destiny’s Child Michelle Williams and Dawson’s Creek Michelle Williams were at the same premiere party and no one got them together for a photo.
That all being said, this is still pretty trippy and fun to behold, and we wish audio of whatever conversation was had around the throne was made available. (“You know, it’s tough for me to even be here today, I’m still so torn up they didn't show you-know-who at the end of the finale.” “You’re being very brave, Queen.”) And we now have fantasies of all kinds of future British royal–Game of Thrones royal crossovers: Cersei and Kate Middleton spotted going shopping in King’s Landing; Tyrion and Prince Harry having a feast replete with ample meat, spirits, and “merriment”; and Arya telling Prince George stories as they fall asleep on bunk beds in Braavos.
